Pictorial Kashan by ‘Mohammad Afsari’

This small pictorial stunner, with an Orientalist design, was made in the workshop of Master Seyyed Mohammad Afsari. He was born in 1922 in the Sarpoleh neighborhood of Kashan. His family’s artistic activities — his father, Seyyed Mirza, was a carpet designer, while his mother, Farah Lagha, was a master of tableau weaving — led him to learn the art of weaving from his mother from an early age. At the age of 13, he began learning carpet design with his uncle, Seyyed Reza Khan Sanei, one of the great masters of Kashan carpets, at the encouragement of his father. His great ability and talent led him to study under Master Haj Hossein Musawir-ol-Maleki, one of the geniuses of the Isfahan school of painting, illumination, and carpet design, and winner of the World Prize at the Brussels Exhibition, for three years, again with the encouragement of his father. Through this experience, in addition to remembering his mother’s teachings and developing his abilities in design under Master Musawir-ol-Maleki, he was able to introduce a new style in the production and finishing of handmade tableau carpets that was unique at the time. Some of his works used as many as 840 colors, all of which were derived from plant materials. His workshop specialized mostly in small, high-end carpets, often pictorial and naturalistic, with one of its key features being the flatwoven sides, similar to those found in the carpets of Amoghli of Mashhad.
