Qashqai Khan Kelleh

Description

This Qashqai ‘Khan’ carpet is a stunning and rare tribal piece. The Qashqai are one of the most powerful and historically important tribal confederations of Persia, traditionally inhabiting the regions of Fars in southern Iran. Renowned for their nomadic way of life, strong tribal identity and exceptional weaving tradition, the Qashqai produced carpets that are among the most distinctive of Persian tribal weaving. Qashqai carpets were traditionally woven in relatively small formats, designed to be practical for a nomadic lifestyle. The extraordinary size of this example makes it particularly unusual and strongly suggests that it was woven for the tribal chief, the ‘Khan’.
