Stunning Bijar Vaghireh

This is a stunning antique Bijar Vaghireh (Carpet Sampler), and a particularly unusual one at that. Vaghirehs were essentially woven design samples, created as a reference for weavers and clients, bringing together different motifs, borders, and elements that could later be developed into larger carpets.

What makes this example especially interesting is its wild and unusual composition. Two completely different borders are incorporated into the same piece, while at the top we find a striking and rather unexpected human figure — an unusual detail for a Bijar Vaghireh and one that gives the whole textile a wonderfully distinctive character. The weaver (a skilled Kurdish woman!) truly wanted to show off her skills! The composition feels almost like a visual catalogue of Bijar weaving, with different patterns and ideas brought together in a single piece.

Beyond its decorative appeal, this Vaghireh is a fascinating document of how Bijar carpets were designed and produced. It is exactly these small peculiarities — the changing borders, the different motifs, and that curious human figure — that make antique weaving samples so interesting.
