Rare Pictorial Tudeshk ‘Nur Ali Shah’

Tudeshk is a small village located approximately 100 km from Isfahan and 50 km from Nain. The village began producing exceptionally high-quality carpets in the early 1900s. Fine weaving, soft kurk wool, light tones — with ivory, light blue, and blue among the predominant colours — and the use of silk highlights in some specimens are important indicators of an original Tudeshk carpet. In the market, these carpets are often referred to as “Nain Tudeshk”, as Nain is the better-known city, despite its carpet production only beginning in the 1950s, more than a generation after Tudeshk. Nain took inspiration from the earlier Tudeshk examples but never reached the same level of quality, becoming instead associated with a more commercial, medium-to-low quality production.

Virtually all Tudeshk carpets were floral or naturalistic in design, while pictorial examples are extraordinarily rare. This magnificent miniature pictorial Tudeshk is therefore a true rarity. Finely woven in soft kurk wool with delicate silk details, it depicts Nur Ali Shah, the celebrated Iranian Sufi master who lived in the late 18th and early 19th centuries and became an important figure in the Sufi tradition. The portrait is accompanied by the inscription “Ya Ali” and “Nur Ali Shah” , adding an important spiritual dimension to the composition.

A remarkable and exceptionally rare example of Tudeshk weaving, combining the extraordinary refinement of its technique with a subject almost never encountered in this production.
