Tabriz ‘Ahmad Shah’ with inscriptions

Description

This is an early 1900s Tabriz carpet depicting Ahmad Shah Qajar, the last ruler of the Qajar dynasty.
Ahmad Shah ascended the throne at a very young age, still a child, and was initially welcomed with genuine affection by the public as his youth conveyed a sense of innocence and moral purity, standing in clear contrast to the harsh and often ruthless image associated with many earlier rulers.

The portrait captures this gentle aura, rendered with refinement and restraint rather than grandeur.
At the lower end of the carpet appears the inscription “Sultan Ahmad Shah Qajar Iran,” written both in Persian and in Cyrillic.
The presence of Cyrillic script strongly suggests a commission linked to Tsarist Russia, either for a Russian patron or as a diplomatic gift from Persia to Russian counterparts.

The palette is soft and nuanced, with tender, muted colours that lend the piece a quiet elegance.
The overall effect is harmonious and dignified, enhancing the historical and symbolic weight of the subject.
The carpet is in perfect condition.
