‘Haji Jalili’ Miniature Tabriz

Description

What a little masterpiece! This exceptionally fine miniature Tabriz was woven by Grand Master Haji Jalili, one of the most celebrated names in the history of Tabriz weaving. Measuring just 77 x 55 cm, it is possibly the smallest Haji Jalili carpet known, an extraordinary contrast to the large and often monumental carpets for which his workshop was famous.

Haji Jalili was also an innovator in color. At the end of the 19th century, when the overwhelming majority of Persian carpets were dominated by intense reds, brilliant blues, and other saturated colors, he developed a remarkably different aesthetic, favouring soft earthy and pastel tones such as ivory, beige, light browns, and muted natural shades. This subtle palette became one of the signatures of his work and gave his carpets an elegance and softness that felt strikingly modern for their time. This tiny Tabriz brings all of that refinement into an exceptionally rare miniature format.
